Blog Questions About Photoshop

Q: What are some of the reasons why people would digitally manipulate an image?

(What are their purposes or intentions?)

A: Many people digitally manipulate an image to enhance the specific results/ effects they believe will grasp the attention of their intended audience. For example if a company is advertising a make-up product, they most likely want to make the model look as beautiful as possible in attempt to portray the message that if females buy this product they, too, will  be as attractive as the chosen model.

Q: Where do we draw the line? Consider fashion (skinny, more attractive models) and news reporting (faked or combined photos).

A: When advertising in magazines or using images in news articles I believe any picture is acceptable as long as the truth is still revealed. For example, if a photograph is used in an article and it is edited to the point where the true story is hidden, (for the soul purpose of greater reactions from the audience), than I believe a line has been crossed.

Q: What is ethical (or the right thing to do) in the digital manipulation and enhancement of a photo and what is not ethical?
A: In my opinion, it is acceptable to remove minor blemishes/imperfections of a model in order to make their product look more attractive to possible consumers. However, I believe a line is crossed if/when companies use Photoshop to change the race of a model to please certain audiences.

Screen Shot

This is a screenshot folders after I learned how to organize them by creating new folders to categorize my files.

Feathered Edge

The effect on this image is called a feathered edge. Some examples of places where this effect may be used could include movies, magazines, posters, ect... If I were to advertise this image it would be in car magazines/ websites. The purpose of this photo would be to sell the car; most likely to older men who have money.

Magazine Photo

This photo is from Canadian living magazine. Some features of this image that were likely made with Photoshop include the tagged edge border as well as the drop shadow effect. The message behind the advertisement is that Rice Krispies are an excellent choice for a child's breakfast. based on the message I also believe that the intended audience are young parents.
